Ni-Hao Kai-Lan

This morning while getting everything ready to go out, I gave in and turned on the tv for the Torito. Lo and behold, I turned to this cartoon on Nickelodean called Ni-Hao Kai-Lan. It’s a blend of mandarin and english in a Dora the Explorer type format and I have to admit, it’s a hoot!

There’s not too many places to find clips online yet since it’s only been on the air since Feb, but I found this one. As a bonus, it has the one chinese children’s song I know, Liang Zhe Lao Hu.

month 3 of babyboba

Posted by admin on Friday Oct 24, 2008 Under Uncategorized

We just past the 3 month marker. Our torito is in the 90th percentile for both height and weight, coming in at a hefty 14 lbs, 8.5 oz and 25 inches long.

The last month has been full of excitement. We went on our first airplane ride. The kiddo did great! Sleeping most of the way.

She began looking at all the toys we have for her, and became entranced with mobiles. In a good mood, she can stay in the crib looking at the mobile for a good 30 min

Her neck is getting stronger and we are practicing head lifts. It’s super cute because she’ll grunt and exert tons of energy trying to lift her head and when it gets too heavy, it will just flop back down. Every day she gets stronger and stronger though.

removing baby boogers

Posted by admin on Thursday Oct 23, 2008 Under Uncategorized

One of the challenges of a parent of an infant is the annoying booger in your baby’s nose. At the hospital they give you a good suction bulb but they don’t really tell you how to get out the boogers when your baby hates it. And I mean hate it. I think one of the reasons a baby learns how to use their hands is to push away my hands while trying to suck out those boogies. After some trial and error and some research this is what I’ve found works.

1. Use the nasal aspirator from the hospital, more suction means faster removal, good for all parties involved.

2. Saline drops, this helps loosen things up, and if you have trouble getting drops in the nose, I found that I wet a q-tip all the way through so that the saline drips off it and stick it up to the nose. The kiddo will inhale some of the drops there and you keep nice and clean. No more saline all over the place.

3. Cover one nostril while you suck from the other. I’m surprised more books don’t tell you that trick, but it really makes life easier.
If nothing comes out after a few tries, repeat steps 2 and 3. It works I tell ya, it really does.

baby gifts

Posted by admin on Friday Oct 3, 2008 Under Uncategorized

everyone has been super generous with baby gifts, and we really appreciate the thought. but we’ve also learned a couple things from getting so many things and i thought i’d share my reflections here in case you are in the market to buy someone a baby gift.

  1. it’s common knowledge that if you buy baby clothes that you should buy big because babies grow fast and it’s non uncommon for a 1 month old baby to wear 3 month old clothes. so we’ve received lots of 6 and 12 month clothes, which is great except we forgot about seasonality. yeah yeah, i’m in california where we don’t really have seasons, but it gets cooler, and we don’t wear spaghetti strap dresses in january, so that 9 month old sundress that’s beautiful and i love, well we probably will never wear it because even in the best case where we might fit it in 6 months, we still probably won’t wear it for christmas. so buy big, that’s a good idea, but don’t forget about seasons because we have them. we really do. pay no attention to the 90 degree weather we experienced this week. hahaha
  2. gift receipt, gift receipt, gift receipt. nuf said
  3. if you buy off the registry, don’t forget to tell the store so if you don’t do #2, it’ll be easier to exchange.
  4. gerber runs small, carter true to size. baby gap and children’s place a little large. just my experience.

the squirt is getting bigger every day and every time i look at her, she seems to develop more personality too. it’s exciting and amazing on a daily basis.

props to cherene for taking this super cute photo of my baby’s hand. i hope she plays piano
